EPL: Chelsea’s struggles continue as Man City secure away win to begin title defense
Manchester City began their Premier League title defense with a 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Erling Haaland marked his 100th appearance for the club in style, scoring his 91st goal to put City ahead in the 18th minute.
The Norwegian striker capitalized on a pass from Bernardo Silva, muscling his way past Chelsea defenders Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.
City sealed the win late in the match, with former Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic adding a second goal in the 84th minute.
Kovacic exploited a disorganized Chelsea midfield, driving forward unchallenged and delivering a powerful finish that Sanchez could not stop, despite a slight touch.
Chelsea, under new manager Enzo Maresca, struggled to find their balance in their Premier League opener, despite picking favourable possession at both halves.
Despite some promising attacking efforts from Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson, and new signing Pedro Neto, the Blues were outshined by the Premier League champions.
Just few minutes after Kovacic’s goal, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was seen leaving the stadium furious, with fans suggesting dissatisfaction from the players.
