EPL: Chelsea complete signing of goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic
Chelsea have completed the signing of Serbian goalkeeper, Djordje Petrovic from Major League Soccer side New England Revolution for £14m.
Petrovic who signed a seven-year deal with an option to extend for a further season, is Chelsea’s second major goalkeeper signing this summer, after Robert Sanchez joined from Brighton in a £25m deal following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move to Real Madrid and Edouard Mendy’s transfer to Al Ahli.
Commenting on being signed by Chelsea, Djordje Petrovic said;
“I grew up watching a lot of Premier League football so it really is a dream for me to be here now. I love the intensity of the league and the passion shown by the supporters.
“I know a lot about Chelsea. I remember watching Drogba but, as a Serbian, I liked to watch players like [Branislav] Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic.
“I’m the next Serbian to play here and I want to achieve many good things at Chelsea like they did!”
Petrovic is now Chelsea’s tenth major signing of the summer. Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku arrived first to reinforce the attack before Angelo Gabriel became their first acquisition from Brazil. Lesley Ugochukwu and Axel Disasi arrived from France before Sanchez, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, and Deivid Washington joined in August.
The 23-year-old has been a standout performer for New England Revolution, keeping seven clean sheets in 22 MLS games this term.
Petrovic started his career in his native Serbia and represented both Rudar Kostolac and Presing Pozarevac before joining Cukaricki in 2014.
After progressing through the club’s youth rank and spending time on loan at FK IMT, his first-team debut for Cukaricki came against Mladost in 2019. From that point on, Petrovic established himself as a first choice.
He went on to make 86 appearances for Cukaricki before completing his transfer to New England Revolution in April 2022.
