EPL: Amorim explains Rashford, Garnacho omission in Manchester derby
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has clarified reason Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho were left out in Manchester City clash.
While United were able to turn the game around in the last minutes, winning 2-1, Amorim has clarified that Rashford and Garnacho were left out of the game due to performance-based decisions, not disciplinary issues.
The absence of the duo, who trained as usual at Carrington with the team, raised questions before United’s dramatic late comeback at the Etihad.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Amorim emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards.
“It’s important to say it was not a disciplinary thing,” Amorim stated. “It’s about performance—training, games, how you engage with teammates, how you push them.
“In this context, when people are losing their jobs at the club, we need to set high standards.”
Amorim stressed that Rashford and Garnacho remain in contention for future games, saying, “Next game, new life, they are fighting for their places.
“Today the team showed we can win without anyone if we play together.”
United’s victory came through Bruno Fernandes’ 88th-minute penalty and Amad Diallo’s composed 90th-minute winner, following Josko Gvardiol’s first-half header for City.
