An officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), yet to be identified, has reportedly collapsed and died in Lagos.
According to a video circulating online, the incident occurred on Sunday in an undisclosed location within Lagos State. The officer, who was off duty and not in uniform, was seen lying lifeless as sympathizers, including police officers, surrounded the scene.
A search of his bag revealed his identity as an EFCC officer through his official ID card.
In the video, a voice confirmed, “He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him.”
Speaking to PUNCH Metro on Monday, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the incident and stated that the matter is under investigation. “Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This incident follows another tragic event reported on January 15, where a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Ikechukwu, shot and killed an EFCC officer, Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu, during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State. The operatives, who had traveled from the EFCC’s zonal headquarters in Enugu, were ambushed while attempting to apprehend suspected cybercriminals.
Oyewale condemned misinformation surrounding the recent events and assured that the commission remains committed to ensuring justice is served.
