Edo Governorship Election: Live updates and results

Voters in Edo State will make an important choice today when they choose a new governor.

Gistreel has been following closely on the Edo gubernatorial election as Governor Godwin Obaseki eight years tenure which started in 2016 November will be coming to an end soon.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), which once held power in the state before Obaseki’s defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019, is determined to regain its influence.

Seventeen candidates are vying for the governorship position, with sixteen men and one woman in the running.

They include:

All Progressives Congress – Senator Monday Okpebholo

People’s Democratic Party – Asue Ighodalo

Labour Party – Olumide Akpata

All People Movement – Ugiagbe Sylvester

All Peoples Party – Areleogbe Osalumese

Action Democratic Party – Kingson Akhime Afere

African Action Congress – Udoh David

Zenith Labour Party – Akhalamhe Amiemenoghena

Boot Party – Osirame Edeipo

Accord Party – Bright Enabulele

African Democratic Congress – Osarenren Derek Izedonmwen

Peoples Redemption Party -Patience Key Ndidi

Young Progressive Party – Paul Okungbowa Ovbokhan

Social Democratic Party – Aner Abdullahi Aliu

About nine of the above-mentioned political parties have unanimously endorsed and collapsed their structure into the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state.

Edo State Elections: Voting Commences Amid Tight Security Across LGA

Edo State consists of 18 Local Government Areas, including Akoko-Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North-East, Esan South-East, Esan West, Etsako Central, Etsako East, Etsako West, Igueben, Ikpoba-Okha, Oredo, Orhionmwon, Ovia North-East, Ovia South-West, Owan East, Owan West, and Uhunmwonde.

Election officials and ad-hoc staff, along with security escorts, were seen being transported to polling stations in the Ibiwe/Iwegie/Ugbahue Registration Area in Oredo LGA, situated within Benin City. INEC officials and their teams were present in the area, awaiting further deployment to other polling stations in the metropolis.

In Esan West LGA, voting commenced at Ujiogba, specifically in units 2, 3, and 11 of the Eguari Primary School within Ward 2. Meanwhile, at Polling Unit 034, Ogbe Primary School in Oredo LGA, voters had already started verifying their names on the voters’ register as of 8:28 AM, though voting was yet to begin.

In Oshiomole’s polling unit, EFCC officials and policemen were actively monitoring activities to prevent any attempts at vote buying. Distribution of election materials was reported to have started at the Ogbe Registration Area Centre in Oredo LGA.

Elsewhere, in Ward 7, Unit 3 of Egor LGA in southern Edo State, ad-hoc officials arrived early and began setting up election materials ahead of the governorship polls.

It’s estimated that over 2.6 million eligible voters across Edo’s 18 LGAs were expected to turn out today to cast their votes and exercise their civic duties.
