Donny van de Beek completes move to Girona from Manchester United
Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek is set to join Girona for a fee less than expected by the Red Devils.
The Dutch international will transfer to the La Liga side for an initial fee of €500,000 (£423,000), with potential add-ons increasing the deal to around £4.5 million.
This deal contrasts sharply with the £40 million United paid Ajax for van de Beek in 2020.
Despite his promising start at Ajax, where he became one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders, van de Beek’s tenure at Old Trafford has been less than ideal.
He managed only 62 appearances and scored two goals over four years.
His loan spell at Everton in the 2021/22 season saw him play seven games, but he struggled to regain form under Erik ten Hag, his former Ajax manager.
Van de Beek joined Eintracht Frankfurt last season, but the German club declined a £9.5 million option to buy him after he made just eight appearances.
Now, he aims to rejuvenate his career at Girona, free from heavy expectations.
In a heartfelt Instagram message, van de Beek thanked Manchester United fans for their support.
“Dear Manchester United family. Today is a memorable day as my adventure at the club comes to an end.
“I want to thank you all for your support throughout the years. From the moment we arrived at Manchester United, we felt extremely welcome and we are grateful for that,” he added.
