‘Decide on time’ – Eguavoen tells Boniface amid goal struggles for Super Eagles
Coach Augustine Eguavoen has pointed out a key issue affecting Victor Boniface’s goal-scoring form for the Super Eagles.
Despite being a prolific scorer for Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface has yet to find the net in several appearances for Nigeria.
Speaking after Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Libya in the 2025 AFCON qualifier in Uyo, Eguavoen highlighted Boniface’s hesitation in front of goal as the main concern.
“Boniface is a very good striker, a clinical finisher, but he has struggled in national colours,” Eguavoen stated during the post-match conference.
According to the coach, Boniface tends to overthink his moves before taking a shot, allowing defenders time to recover.
“Sometimes, these chances don’t come. I remember it happened in Rwanda just like today. When you get half chances, players like Romario would toe-poke the ball.
“But Boniface likes to dress and dress and then defenders recover. If he decides on time, Boniface will score a lot of goals.”
Boniface has now gone without a goal in matches against Rwanda, Benin Republic and Libya, adding pressure to the talented forward to find his form with the national team.
