Dani Alves granted €1m bail pending appeal outcome of rape conviction

Former Brazilian football star Dani Alves has been permitted to leave prison after spending 14 months in custody.

While his release only lasts until the outcome of his appeal against a rape conviction is ascertained, he will also have to pay a hefty bail fee of €1million.

This follows his conviction last month, where he was sentenced to four and a half years in jail and ordered to pay €150,000 in damages to the victim.

Despite being granted bail, Alves will be subject to several conditions.

He must surrender both of his passports, refrain from coming within 1,000 meters of the victim or any places they frequent, and attend weekly meetings with legal authorities, in addition to promptly responding to their calls.

Originally detained as a flight risk, Alves will face immediate return to prison if he attempts to flee or violates any of the imposed conditions.

The appeal process is expected to last until at least another 13 months, just about same time his conviction judgment lasted.

This means if Alves meets the requirements stated, he could have a year and three months with his family.

The decision to grant bail comes amidst concerns that Alves, with Brazil lacking an extradition policy with Spain, could evade justice by returning to his homeland.

However, during a recent court hearing, Alves vowed not to run away, but remain in Spain, where he owns property in Barcelona.
