Conference League: James, Fernandez seal Chelsea’s narrow win over Copenhagen

Reece James and Enzo Fernandez were on target as Chelsea edged past Copenhagen 2-1 in their Europa Conference League Round of 16 first leg on Thursday.

A cagey opening 30 minutes saw both sides struggle for control in midfield, though Chelsea suffered an early setback when Malo Gusto limped off.

This forced Enzo Maresca to bring on Marc Cucurella and reshuffle his defense.

Maresca’s tactical adjustments at halftime proved decisive.

He introduced Enzo Fernandez, Christopher Nkunku and Levi Colwill and Chelsea struck immediately after the restart.

James fired a stunning long-range effort into the bottom corner, giving the Blues the lead.

The game opened up and the Blues doubled their advantage after the hour mark.

Tyrique George’s pressing won possession high up the pitch and Fernandez calmly slotted home his cut-back to make it 2-0.

Copenhagen pulled one back late on, to keep their hopes alive when they visit Stamford Bridge next week.
