Community Shield: Manchester City edge out Liverpool in Penalty shoot-out
Manchester City kick off the campaign by winning the Community Shield on penalties, defeating Liverpool 5-4 at Wembley Stadium.
It was not a great performance from Pep Guardiola’s men especially in the second half when they were at the mercy of the Reds’ finishing in front of goal. Raheem Sterling had put them ahead in the first half, and he missed a couple of good opportunities to extend their advantage.
Joel Matip got Liverpool back into the game, heading home from close range. Jurgen Klopp’s men were denied several times late on by Claudio Bravo and a brilliant acrobatic clearance from Kyle Walker to deny Mohamed Salah.
As a result, the contest was decided by a penalty shootout. Georginio Wijnaldum was the unfortunate man to miss his effort, while Gabriel Jesus held his nerve to secure the victory for City.
Liverpool open their Premier League campaign next Friday against newly-promoted Norwich City at Anfield, while City begin away at West Ham United on Saturday.
