Champions League: Alvarez shines in Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over Leipzig

Julian Alvarez late stunner has helped Manchester City secure a hard-fought 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League.

Alvarez, coming off the bench just a few minutes after Phil Foden’s goal, delivered a stunning strike to get Pep Guardiola’s side their second goal.

The Argentine received a pass from Jeremy Doku and beautifully placed the ball into the net from the edge of the box. Meanwhile, in stoppage time, the World Cup winner returned the favour by setting up Doku to seal the win.

Erling Haaland probably did not have the night he hoped for, as he missed several chances. City now have six points from two matches and currently top group ‘G’ in the tournament.

The Etihad team had full control of the game, right from the start, with Rico Lewis’s brilliance in the midfield coupled with quality displays from Rodri and Foden.

Although City dominated the match, they struggled to convert their chances, causing Guardiola visible pains on the sideline.

City’s opening goal was set up by academy star, Lewis combining with Bernardo Silva before releasing the ball to Foden, whose shot found the net. The strike marked Foden’s 11th Champions League goal.

However, Leipzig capitalized on a Jack Grealish mistake early in the second half, with Lois Openda converting the chance to give the host their only goal in the game.
