Prominent Yoruba elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, has passed away at the age of 96.
He died peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
According to reports, his family confirmed his passing in a statement released to the media.
Adebanjo, a respected lawyer, former Organising Secretary of the Action Group, and Afenifere’s national leader, was a fearless champion of democracy and justice throughout his lifetime.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
“We will always treasure his unwavering commitment to truth, equity, and justice. He dedicated his life to the struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria, a cause he pursued until his final breath,” the family stated.
Consultations are ongoing with his associates, friends, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond to finalize arrangements for a befitting funeral. Further details will be announced in due course.
A condolence register has been opened at his residence at 8 Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, and at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
