Bournemouth’s youngster Malachi Ogunleye chooses Nigeria over England for international career

Bournemouth midfielder Malachi Ogunleye has opted to represent Nigeria at the international level, choosing his father’s land over England.

Born to a Nigerian father and raised in England, Ogunleye had the option to play for either country.

His decision comes after a recent trip to Nigeria, which reportedly strengthened his connection to his roots.

Ogunleye, currently in the first year of a two-year scholarship at Bournemouth, expressed excitement about the attention he’s received in Nigeria.

“I’ve had some recognition from the newspapers in Nigeria, so it’s been nice to see that,” he shared with Bournemouth’s official website.

This decision paves the way for Ogunleye to potentially feature for Nigeria at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Recall Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, secured their spot in the competition by winning the WAFU B U-20 Championship in Togo.

Ogunleye, a regular for Bournemouth’s U-20 team, is expected to bring versatility and skill to Nigeria’s midfield, if called up.
