Awoniyi vs Wood: Michael Owen weighs in on Forest’s striker dilemma
Nottingham Forest’s attack has drawn praise from former Liverpool star Michael Owen, who believes manager Nuno Espírito Santo faces a selection challenge between strikers Chris Wood and Taiwo Awoniyi.
In Forest’s commanding 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Monday, both forwards made their mark.
Wood, in stellar form this season, netted his 12th goal in 20 Premier League appearances with a fine strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s assist just before halftime.
Awoniyi, limited to a bench role due to Wood’s consistency, made an impact as well.
Substituted in the 88th minute, the Nigerian striker scored his first goal of the season in stoppage time, finishing a clever cut-back from James Ward-Prowse.
Owen, analyzing the match on Premier League Productions, lauded the team’s depth and hinted at the selection dilemma awaiting Espírito Santo.
“Awoniyi, as you said, he was scoring, banging them in Chris Wood pace only last season and now he can’t get into the team, understably so,” Owen said.
“Lovely problems there to have to choose between those two and have the players as well to come on and make a difference.
“Things are good and they are keeping a lot of their players fit, that’s so important in the game nowadays if you’ve got a fit squad.”
The win marked Nottingham Forest’s sixth consecutive Premier League victory, a club record, and lifted them to third in the league standings, behind Liverpool and Arsenal.
