Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta hints new role for star forward Nwaneri
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has hinted that 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri could have a future as a striker.
Nwaneri has impressed this season, predominantly featuring as a right-sided attacking midfielder in his 14 first-team appearances.
Despite limited Premier League minutes, the teenager has proven to be an important player for Arsenal in their Carabao Cup campaign.
So far, he has scored three goals in two starts, earning calls from fans for increased playing time.
However, with Martin Odegaard occupying a similar position in Arsenal’s starting lineup, Nwaneri’s opportunities have been restricted.
Speaking ahead of the Gunners’ EFL Cup quarter-final against Crystal Palace, Arteta suggested a positional switch could unlock Nwaneri’s potential.
“Ethan can play as a right attacking midfielder, left attacking midfielder, as a right winger, and there’s another position he can develop into in a few years’ time,” Arteta revealed.
When pressed on the specific role, Arteta pointed to a future for Nwaneri as a striker.
“Nine. He’s got the goal in front of him, and he just looks at the goal. He has a tremendous ability to put the ball in the back of the net.”
