Arsenal legend Ian Wright bids farewell to ‘Match of the Day’ punditry after 27 years
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has announced he will be stepping back from his punditry role on ‘Match of the Day‘ (MOTD) at the end of the season.
Wright, who made his debut appearance on the football show in 1997, expressed gratitude for his time over the years.
Sharing on X, Wright said, “After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I’ll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season.”
The decision marks the end of an era for the Arsenal icon on the show that he described as his “Holy Grail” and “Graceland.”
Reflecting on his MOTD journey, Wright mentioned, “I’m stepping back having made great friends and many great memories.”
While acknowledging that the decision had been lurking for a while, he expressed excitement about exploring new opportunities on Saturdays.
The former Crystal Palace and Arsenal striker, who scored 185 goals for the Gunners, won several major titles during his playing career.
Among them are the Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup.
His journey with MOTD allowed fans to see a different side of the football legend as he transitioned into a successful pundit, and one of fans favourites.
