Armed thugs shoot sporadically to block new Rivers LGA chairmen from accessing offices
Heavy gunfire has been reported across various local government areas in Rivers State, as armed thugs attempt to prevent newly sworn-in local government chairmen from accessing the 23 council offices.
Following the conclusion of the local government area elections by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) on Sunday, Governor Sir Siminialayi Fubara officially sworn in the elected 23 chairmen into office.
Also, the Inspector General of Police according to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, had ordered policemen to vacate the premises of the LGAs in the state.
However, Monday, morning there reports that a political group in the state against the just concluded LGA polls were mobilizing 20 youths par ward to stop the new chairmen and the councilors from gaining access on to the different council Secretariats.
At press time, heavy shooting is going on at Ikwerre LGA secretariat, Isiokpo, Khana LGA secretariat, Bori, and others.
