Anthony Joshua eyes world title clash with Croatian Filip Hrgovic after Wilder’s loss
Anthony Joshua’s path to heavyweight glory seems twisted, with Filip Hrgovic in view, after Deontay Wilder’s unexpected loss to Joseph Parker.
Joshua who delivered an impressive victory against Otto Wallin on the same card where Wilder suffered defeat, is now in line for a shot at the IBF world title against the ‘dangerous’ Croatian fighter Hrgovic.
Initially, Joshua and Wilder were set to face each other in March 2024, with both men needing a win in their recent match to secure the bout.
While Joshua fulfilled his end of the deal with a dominant performance, Wilder was outboxed by Parker, denting the possibility of their anticipated showdown.
While this is the case, the outcome has opened up a new opportunity for Joshua.
With Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk set to battle for the undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO titles in February, the IBF belt is likely to become vacant due to a mandatory defense.
As the current IBF number one contender, Hrgovic is now in prime position to challenge for the vacant title, according to a report by talkSPORT.
Joshua’s victory over Wallin has elevated him to the IBF number two spot, setting the stage for a potential showdown between Hrgovic and Joshua for the world championship.
Commenting on the recent match, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said, “We signed for Wilder, he lost tonight.
“But maybe it’s a blessing because he wants to become a three-time heavyweight world champion. Now it’s gonna be AJ vs Hrgovic for the world title.”
