AFCON 2025Q: Super Eagles’ boycott threat could cost Nigeria three points – report
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) may award Libya three points if the Super Eagles boycott their upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifier on Tuesday.
Gistreel reported that the Super Eagles were left stranded for 13 hours at Libya’s Al Abraq Airport without food.
The team’s captain William Troost-Ekong, in a post on X, expressed dissatisfaction over the situation, calling on CAF to mediate.
He wrote, “As the captain together with the team we have decided that we will NOT play this game.
“CAF should look at the report and what is happening here. Even if they decide to allow this kind of behaviour, let them have the points.”
A statement by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) followed, confirming the team will no longer take part in the second match of the AFCON qualifier, after a home win in the first leg last Friday.
However, if this happens, CAF could punish the three-time African champions for boycotting the game.
On the other hand, if the football body decides that Libya have mistreated the 2024 AFCON finalists, the North African side will face sanctions as well.
