18-year-old girl dies after allegedly jumping into well in Kwara

The Kwara State Fire Service has recovered the lifeless body of a 18-year-old girl named Waliyah from a domestic well in the Ile-Olodo Ita Merin – Alore area of Ilorin West Local Government Area.

The incident took place around 6 pm on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

According to reports from Daily Trust, the young lady, Waliyah, allegedly jumped into the well unexpectedly after engaging in a friendly conversation with her neighbours in the compound. The incident left residents in shock and disbelief.

Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the tragic event in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

The statement revealed that the fire service responded promptly to an emergency rescue operation in the Ile-olodo Ita Merin – Alore area of Ilorin.

“On the 7th of November 2023, at 18:46 hours, the Kwara State Fire Service responded to an emergency rescue operation in the Ile-olodo Ita Merin – Alore area of Ilorin, Ilorin West Local Government Area Kwara State,” the statement read. 
“Tragically, an 18-year-old girl named Waliyah had drowned in a domestic well. The dedicated personnel of the Kwara State Fire Service successfully recovered her lifeless body and respectfully handed it over to Alhaji Adisa Akanbi Magaji of Ile Olodo, Ita-Merin, Ilorin.” the statement read.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, emphasized the importance of safety consciousness to the general public.

He issued a stern warning to parents and guardians, urging them to refrain from sending their children to fetch water from domestic wells.
