Nigeria win Mozambique 3-2 to mark first international friendly victory in five years

Super Eagles of Nigeria have ended their international friendly woes in a 3-2 victory over Mozambique, in Portugal.

Nigeria had a challenging start in the game that held at the Estadio Municipal De Portimao, with Francis Uzoho conceiving a six-minute opener from Mozambique’s player Catamo.

The Super Eagles retaliated, raining terror on their African rivals with goals from Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka and a penalty from Moses Simon.

All three goals from the three-time African Champions came in the first half.

However, 10-man Mozambique team struggled to return to the match, but was only able to put one more across Uzoho, who had a less-than-ideal game.

The clash with Mozambique ends the Super Eagles international duty, having drawn 2-2 with Saudi Arabia last Friday.

The match also marks Jose Peseiro’s men first win in five years, after playing 15 international friendlies without a win. The team lost nine of those friendlies, while picking up six draws since claiming a 1-0 victory over Egypt in March 2019

The game now serves as a boost for the Super Eagles, in preparation for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nation (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November.

Recall Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho missed out in the Monday game, with Osimhen suffering a minor injury and Iheanacho leaving the team’s camp to attend to some urgent personal matters.
