Jurgen Klopp turned down opportunity to coach Germany

Liverpool’s coach, Jurgen Klopp turned down an offer to become the new head coach of Germany before Julian Nagelsmann’s appointment.

Recall that Germany parted ways with Hansi Flick on September 10 after a horrendous run of four wins in 17 games, culminating with a 4-1 defeat at home to Japan earlier this month.

Some European publications are now reporting that in the wake of Flick’s exit, Germany’s FA (DFB) made Klopp a top candidate for the head coach job, but his agent dismissed suggestions he would take on the role days after.

A poll of the German supporters also made Klopp the unanimous pick among the public and he was sounded out by the country’s FA.

It was further gathered that the DFB followed up their interest in Klopp with an approach to the 56-year-old even before the sacking of Flick was formalised. Nevertheless, it was made clear in their conversations that he was not interested in leaving Liverpool yet.

Klopp, who spoke to RTL earlier this week after Nagelsmann’s appointment as the new coach of Germany, explained why he was keen to remain at Liverpool.

He said;

“We’re building Liverpool 2.0 here, we want to attack again and not just look at how much longer can we go on? I have a loyalty to Liverpool. My heart is here in Liverpool. You can’t just cut out the eight years.”

Klopp also suggested Nagelsmann was the ideal choice. He said;

“I think Julian is a great solution because he is a great coach. He had already proven at 28 that he is a fantastic coach. He has eight years of experience. Others have that at 45 or 50, at the highest level.”

With Nagelsmann at the helm, the hope is to rejuvenate the team and bring success in Euro 2024, especially given it’s on home soil.
