EPL: Manchester United confirm Amad Diallo will miss season start after knee injury

Manchester United have confirmed that Amad Diallo will miss the beginning of the Premier League season due to a knee injury he picked up during the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the US.

The Ivory Coast international is back at Old Trafford this summer following a successful loan spell at Sunderland, where he scored 14 goals and registered four assists in 42 appearances last term.

Amad started Manchester United’s opening two friendlies of the summer against Leeds United and Lyon before appearing off the bench in the clash with Arsenal on July 21.

However, the forward only lasted 13 minutes of the contest with the Gunners, having picked up a knee issue.

The 21-year-old subsequently missed the team’s next three pre-season matches on their tour of the United States against Wrexham, Real Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund.

Amid speculation on the seriousness of his injury, Manchester United have now confirmed that Amad Diallo will not be available for the start of the season.

The club said in a statement;

“Manchester United winger Amad will miss the first part of the Premier League season.

“It is a blow to the youngster’s hopes of making his mark, after being involved in the earlier stages of our pre-season campaign.”

The setback also rules him out of a loan exit this summer as he will spend at least the first half of the season with the first team.

Amad staying at United does give Erik ten Hag another option in forward areas when he returns to action, where he will likely compete with Antony and Jadon Sancho for a spot on the right wing. While Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount can also play on that flank, Amad will hope to make an impression on the Dutch boss when he returns to training.
