Nigerian man allegedly dies in police custody in South Africa

A Nigerian man identified as Abiodun Victor Olawunmi reportedly lost his life while in the custody of the South African Police Service in Johannesburg.

The details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but the incident has sparked outrage within the Nigerian community residing in South Africa.

According to a post made by Edward Sunday, a Nigerian resident of Sandton, Gauteng, who hails from Oyo State, Olawunmi was said to have been suffocated by the South African police.

The circumstances leading to his arrest were connected to a raid conducted by Minister of Police Bheki Cele in Johannesburg Central and its surrounding areas.

Upon receiving news of Olawunmi’s arrest, his brothers began making preparations to visit him at the police station. However, their plans took a tragic turn when they received a phone call from an officer informing them of Abiodun’s untimely death.

Shocked and devastated, the brothers immediately rushed to the Johannesburg Central Police Station, where they discovered his lifeless body in the parking lot.

The news of Olawunmi’s death spread quickly within the Nigerian community, and it ignited a wave of protests.

Photos shared on the Nigerians in South Africa Facebook page depict Nigerian nationals taking to the streets, demanding justice for the deceased and expressing their grievances over the incident.
