EPL: Reiss Nelson signs new contract with Arsenal
Arsenal have confirmed that winger Reiss Nelson has officially put pen to paper on a new contract to extend his stay with the Gunners.
The footballer’s previous deal was set to expire this summer and it appeared as though a departure from his boyhood club was on the cards, but an agreement over a new four-year deal was reached towards the end of last season.
Reiss Nelson who joined Arsenal at the age of eight, will now stay at the London club till 2027 following the new contract he signed.
Commenting on the development, Arsenal’s coach, Mikel Arteta said;
“Reiss is a player I have admired since the first day I was here. He has tremendous ability and is such an exciting offensive talent. Reiss knows how important he is to our squad with the quality he has.
“It’s great that Reiss has committed his future to us – he knows this club so well, he grew up here and we look forward to enjoying many more good moments with him.”
Nelson had serious interest from AC Milan and Brighton before committing his future to his boyhood club, although there is the option for a year further and it’s thought that Mikel Arteta played a key role in negotiations to convince him to stay.
The footballer made a number of valuable contributions to the Gunners’ title charge last season and has been rewarded with a new deal thought to be worth £100,000 per week over four years.
23-year-old Nelson struggled for minutes in his first full season under Mikel Arteta. He was allowed to leave on loan to Feyenoord in 2021-22, but his form since returning to his parent club has helped the manager make up his mind.
The Londoner, who was still in primary school when he first joined the Gunners’ academy, scored his first goal for the club in 2020 but had to wait until October 2022 to add to it.
