Netherlands knocks out USA from 2022 World Cup
Netherlands became the first country to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals after USA 3-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday, December 3.
The Louis van Gaal-led team grabbed the lead with their first attack when a slick move ended with Denzel Dumfries cutting a perfect pass back for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay to stroke home.
Dumfries then played a carbon copy ball for Blind to make it 2-0 and put his side in cruise control.
While substitute Haji Wright scrambled in a goal for the Americans in the 76th minute to keep their hope alive, the Dutch team crushed their dream after Denzel Dumfries’ volley.
The USA has never won a World Cup game it has trailed and has also not beaten a European team in the tournament in its last 12 tries.
The Netherlands, on the other hand, has never lost a World Cup game of any kind under coach Louis van Gaal and hasn’t lost in the round of 16 in 16 years.
