Just Like Twitter, FG Reveals Plans To Regulate Netflix, Other Similar Streaming Services In Nigeria
Federal Government has revealed its plans to regulate streaming and content providing services such as Netflix in Nigeria.
Explaining the reason for this move, the country’s information minister, Lai Mohammed noted that the streaming services can be exploited to cause chaos and undermine Nigeria’s democratic processes.
Speaking at a two-day conference themed, “The implication of Nigeria censorship laws and regulatory framework for Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming services and content providers in Nigeria,” the minister who was represented by the Director, Information and Technology in the ministry, Comfort Ajiboye, iterated that social media and streaming services can impact negatively on Nigeria.
It should be noted that Netflix is one of the country’s streaming services that offer a wide variety of award-winning TV shows.
The streaming service also offers movies, anime, documentaries, and more on thousands of entertainment series for streaming.
The federal government’s plans come after Twitter, a micro-blogging platform was banned in the country, with discussions heightening on its regulation.
