Young Boys 2-1 Manchester Utd: Ronaldo scores but United beaten in Champions League group opener

Manchester United slumped to a shock defeat in the opening match of their UEFA Champions League group against Young Boys on Tuesday.

The visitors were beaten 2-1 late on by Swiss side, Young Boys in their Champions League opener after United right-back, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s red card changed the game’s direction.

Manchester United had been heavy favourites heading into the game and made the perfect start as Cristiano Ronaldo – who went level with Iker Casillas on all-time Champions League appearances (177) – slotted in through David Von Ballmoos’ legs in the 13 minutes.

But the direction of the entire match was changed in the 35th minute, as Wan-Bissaka was shown a straight red card for a heavy and clumsy challenge on Christopher Martins.

Despite playing with 10 men for 55 minutes, it looked like a solid defensive display would see United come away with a point.

However, it would not be, as a late error from midfielder Jesse Lingard allowed Jordan Pefok to slot home the winner with the final kick of the game in stoppage time (90+5).
