Rihanna backs #LekkiTollgate protesters, says peaceful protest is a human right
Popular American singer and businesswoman, Robyn Rihanna Fenty has shown support for the recent #OccupyLekkiTollgate protest.
Recall that Nigerians under the hash tag, #OccupyLekkiTollgate had protested on Saturday, February 13, against the reopening of the Lekki tollgate, their reason being that #EndSARS victims of 20th October 2020 are yet to get the justice they deserve.
According to them, justice must be done to the lives that were allegedly lost during last year’s #EndSARS campaign before the Lekki tollgate can reopen for commercial purposes.
However, upon their arrival at the Lekki tollgate on Saturday morning, security personnel put in place to ensure the protest does not hold, got them arrested and detained. Among those arrested was popular Nigerian comedian, Mr. Macaroni.
Viral video evidences showed they were tied up and maltreated as though they were criminals,an act which many public figures including Nigerian celebrities condemned.
The police also arraigned them in court on a three-count charge bothering on breaching Covid-19 protocols, breaching public peace and for violating the government’s order not to protest.
However, they were all granted bail and subsequently released after they pleaded not guilty to the charged leveled against them.
Rihanna has now taken to her official Twitter page of over 100 million followers to tweet in support of the #OccupyLekkiTollgate protest, noting that peaceful protest is a fundamental human right.
