Ayra Starr faces backlash for ‘insensitive’ post amid Lagos corper controversy

Popular Afrobeat star Ayra Starr is facing heavy criticism over her recent post, which many have deemed insensitive given the ongoing controversy surrounding a Lagos corps member.

The singer took to X to share two stylish photos of herself in a black gown, expecting admiration from fans.

However, the post was met with backlash, as many accused her of ignoring pressing national issues, particularly the ordeal of an NYSC member who recently called out President Bola Tinubu‘s government over inflation and the hardship faced by corps members.

The corps member’s viral video, in which she also ridiculed Lagos for its alleged bad odor, sparked outrage, with reports emerging that she was being threatened by NYSC officials. Amid this heated debate, Ayra Starr’s post was seen as tone-deaf, leading to online criticism.

One user, @Obaji_esq, wrote, “Can’t you see that today is about calling out bad government? Can’t you use your platform for once and talk about the real issues? Must you post your face and body?”

Another critic, @PapiJruee “Do you know how much love you’d get if you weild the power you have over social media to help project the cries of those who are still your fans Oyinkan??? Don’t stay silent. It concerns you too. Nothing stops you from projecting the cries of your people. Oyinkan, show up!”

Similarly, @KlasickTheHost slammed the singer, saying, “The country is in a mess, and you’re here posting about your nakedness. You haven’t said anything about the young NYSC corper being threatened for calling out the government! You should read the room, girl!”
