Plymouth 1-0 Liverpool: Championship bottom club knockout Premier League leaders in FA Cup upset

Liverpool’s hopes of a quadruple ended as Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle knocked them out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at Home Park.

Ryan Hardie scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty after Harvey Elliott handled the ball in the box.

Referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot after Elliott’s raised hands made contact with the ball following a flick-on by Darko Gyabi.

Hardie made no mistake, sending Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot made ten changes from the side that thrashed Tottenham 4-0 on Thursday, fielding a youthful squad.

Only Kelleher retained his place, while 17-year-old Treymaurice Nyoni and 20-year-old James McConnell made rare starts.

The Reds suffered an early setback when captain Joe Gomez limped off, replaced by Isaac Mabaya. Diogo Jota then took over the armband.

Plymouth, bottom of the Championship, put in a resilient defensive display to see out the game, securing only the fourth-ever FA Cup win for a club at the foot of the second tier against top-flight opposition.
