Delta LG chair distributes free medication amid cholera outbreak

To curb the spread of the cholera outbreak in his locality, the Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Area, Delta State, Rawlings Andaye, has distributed free medications to all primary healthcare centers across the council area.

According to Punch, the Supervisory Councillor for Health, Adaka Amameniye, while distributing the allocated drugs to Kpakiama Primary Healthcare Centre and other health facilities in the creek on Friday, emphasized that the council provided the medications at no cost to all primary healthcare centers in the area.

He explained that the council chairman took proactive measures to prevent the spread of the disease, ensuring swift action even before any cases were recorded in the LGA.

He further stated that the chairman had mandated free treatment for cholera-related cases at all healthcare centers, saying, “In case of any emergency arising from the disease, patients will receive treatment at no cost.”

“Our dedicated council chairman has prioritized both preventive and precautionary measures by ensuring that primary healthcare centers across the council area are stocked with the necessary medications, even before any confirmed cases were reported.”

Amameniye urged residents to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest primary healthcare facility in case of any cholera-related symptoms.

Chief Matron of Kpakiama Primary Healthcare Centre, Eunice Edonkumoh, who is the most senior healthcare officer in the LGA, expressed appreciation for the chairman’s swift response. She confirmed that the free drug distribution was ongoing across various healthcare centers through designated health officers.

She further explained that cholera is a communicable disease primarily caused by contaminated food and water, with cases already recorded in communities such as Esanma, Ogriagbene, Akugbene, Kpakiama, and other areas within the council.

I urge the people of Bomadi Local Government Area and its environs to maintain proper hygiene and take necessary precautions to avoid contracting the disease, she advised.

She also highlighted key preventive measures, including:
✅ Boiling drinking water properly
✅ Serving and eating food while hot
✅ Washing hands before and after meals
✅ Washing fruits thoroughly before consumption
✅ Maintaining proper sanitation, including handwashing after using the toilet.

She reiterated the importance of hygiene practices in preventing the spread of cholera and encouraged the community to remain vigilant.
