Injury: Boniface ruled out of Monchengladbach clash, expected to return next week

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed Victor Boniface will not feature in Saturday’s clash against Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Nigerian forward continues his recovery from a thigh injury sustained in late November.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Alonso said: “His development is good. He trained a bit but is not in the squad for Saturday.

“He needs time to train and get fit, but his progress is promising.”

Boniface, a key figure in Leverkusen’s attack, scored six Bundesliga goals before his injury.

Alonso hinted that the 23-year-old could return for next week’s Champions League fixture against Atlético Madrid or the Bundesliga showdown with RB Leipzig.

“There is a chance for Boniface to play next week. We will see. His feeling is good. For tomorrow, it’s still a bit early, but next week, yes, there is a chance,” Alonso added.
