Championship: Ruud van Nistelrooy competes with Lampard over Coventry City managerial job

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was recently let go by Manchester United, has reportedly applied to become the next manager of Coventry City.

The 48-year-old Dutchman is eager to build his coaching career in English football after a brief but impressive stint at United.

Recall he was also successful in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven, where he won the Dutch Cup in 2023.

Van Nistelrooy stepped in as United’s interim manager after Erik ten Hag’s departure, leading the team to three wins and a draw in four matches, including a long-awaited Europa League victory over PAOK.

Despite his efforts, the club opted for a fresh start under Ruben Amorim, leaving the former striker without a role.

Coventry City are currently searching for a replacement for their former manager Mark Robins, who was dismissed despite his seven-year tenure, where he transformed the Sky Blues from League Two strugglers to Premier League hopefuls.

Coventry owner Doug King revealed receiving applications from “high-quality” candidates, including ex-Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

Van Nistelrooy faces stiff competition for the position but boasts a strong managerial record and an illustrious playing career, making him a compelling candidate.
