Fire breaks out in Spanish retirement home, kills 10
A fire that erupted in Jardines de Villafranca, a retirement home in northeastern Spanish town of Villafranca de Ebro in the early hours of today (Friday), killed 10 people.
According to reports, the tragedy happened at about 5 am in the morning and the deceased have all been deposited in a morgue.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Friday, the Spain Aragon Emergency Services revealed that investigation is currently ongoing.
The statement reads, “At least 10 people have died in a fire at a nursing home in Villafranca de Ebro that occurred this morning. (More information to be provided).”
According to reports by Spanish media, there were 82 people inside the home when the blaze broke out at around 5 am.
Speaking on the deaths, the local media revealed that the fire was concentrated in one room, but the smoke spread throughout the residence leading to the death of the ten residents.
“Fortunately that room has a security door which prevented the fire from spreading but the causes of the deaths are likely due to smoke inhalation. We cannot really prove this as investigation is still ongoing,” the media added.
Jardines de Villafranca residence was opened in 2008 as a home for the elderly but had recently specialised in helping elderly people with mental health problems.
