Varane to assume non-playing role at Como as he retires from football

Former Real Madrid and Manchester United defender Raphaël Varane has officially retired from football at 31.

Varane cited a knee injury that cut short his time at Serie A side Como.

Varane, who had signed with Como after leaving Manchester United, featured briefly in a Coppa Italia match before his injury.

He broke the news in a heartfelt Instagram post, saying, “I’ve taken on many challenges, defied the impossible, and I leave with immense pride and fulfillment.”

The Frenchman, a key figure in France’s 2018 World Cup win, enjoyed a glittering career.

He spent a decade at Real Madrid, winning three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies.

After joining Manchester United in 2021, he helped the club lift the FA Cup in 2024.

Varane expressed gratitude for his journey, adding, “I have no regrets. I’ve won more than I could have dreamed of and always stayed true to my principles.”

Meanwhile, Como have confirmed Varane will remain with the club in a non-playing role.
