Pochettino’s Chelsea exit complicating his signing as new USA manager – report

Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of becoming the new boss of the United States men’s national team, but faces complications from his last job.

Pochettino, who guided Chelsea to a sixth-place Premier League finish last season, parted ways with the club after a £10 million pay-off.

Although this severance package complicated his move to the U.S., it is now revealed that it won’t impact his new role financially, confirms talkSPORT.

Reports from August indicated that Pochettino had verbally agreed to replace Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed following the USA’s early exit from the 2024 Copa America.

Meanwhile, Pochettino previously worked with U.S. sporting director Matt Crocker during his time at Southampton and will now lead the team into the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

The 52-year-old Argentine is drawn to the prospect of managing the U.S. team through both the World Cup and the Olympics, alongside lucrative sponsorship opportunities.

This will be Pochettino’s first stint managing a national team, having been linked to the England job following Gareth Southgate’s resignation after Euro 2024.
