End of Era: Messi, Ronaldo misses Ballon d’Or nomination for first time in 20 years

The 2024 Men’s Ballon d’Or nominees have been revealed with legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo missing out.

This marks the first time since 2003 that the duo will be missing out in the famous award.

Messi holds the record for most Ballon d’Or title with eight (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2023).

Al Nassr skipper Ronaldo, follows closely with five (2008, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017), and boasts as the player with the most nominations (eighteen).

The two legends of the game have now continued their careers elsewhere outside Europe.

Ronaldo has been fortunate with Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr, bagging goals in his usual form, same as Argentine-born, Messi, who is now with America’s Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.

Meanwhile, among notable players nominated for the 2024 edition of the award include: Erling Haaland, Vinicius Jr, Kylian Mbappe, Toni Kroos, and Rodri.

Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman also made the list, same with Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Lamine Yamal.
