Lamine Yamal scores in Barcelona’s late 2-1 win against Athletic Club

Barcelona edged a dramatic 2-1 win over Athletic Club in their first home game of the La Liga season, giving Hansi Flick a victorious start.

The match at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys began with few clear chances until Barcelona’s young star, Lamine Yamal, broke the deadlock.

Yamal, playing against his friend’s team, curled in a stunning shot to put the Catalans ahead, marking his first goal of the season.

However, Athletic Club responded before halftime. Oihan Sancet coolly converted a penalty, leveling the score.

Barcelona came out stronger after the break, with Robert Lewandowski leading the charge.

The Polish striker saw his header bounce off the post and was twice denied by Athletic goalkeeper Alex Padilla.

But just when it seemed Lewandowski would end the night frustrated, he found the back of the net, smashing home the winning goal in the dying minutes.

It was Lewandowski’s second match-winning goal in as many weeks, following his last against Valencia.

The win maintains Barcelona’s perfect start to the 2024/25 season as they look ahead to extending their streak against Rayo Vallecano next weekend.
