Manchester City in talks for Ilkay Gündoğan’s return from Barcelona

Manchester City have initiated discussions with Barcelona regarding the potential return of Ilkay Gündoğan.

The German international left the Premier League Champions just over a year to join the Catalan giants.

According to reports, Gündoğan, who has been informed by Barcelona that he is no longer a key part of their plans, has given his agents the green light to explore new opportunities.

Despite having offers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Galatasaray, Gündoğan appears to be leaning towards a return to City, where manager Pep Guardiola is reportedly open to bringing him back.

Barcelona, struggling with financial constraints, may allow the 33-year-old to leave on a free transfer, which would save the club around €20 million in gross salary.

Gündoğan played a vital role for Barcelona last season, featuring more than any other player and contributing a career-high 14 assists.

However, under Hansi Flick, the German skipper is no longer seen as a starter, particularly with the presence of other midfield options like Dani Olmo, Pedri, and Gavi.
