Minimum Wage: President Tinubu approves ₦70K for workers

President Bola Tinubu approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for workers and committed to reviewing the national minimum wage law every three years.

This announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s Special Adviser for Information and Strategy, in a statement on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

President Tinubu shared these decisions during a meeting with leaders of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja.

The statement reads in part, “President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers and promised to review the national minimum wage law every three years.”

Additionally, President Tinubu pledged to explore ways to assist the private sector and regional governments in paying the minimum wage. This meeting marked the second time in seven days that the president and labour leaders convened in Abuja.

Onanuga noted that the labour leaders praised the president for his “fatherly gesture.”

Furthermore, Tinubu promised to use his discretionary powers to address the demands of university unions seeking unpaid salaries for four months.
