Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has said that both he and the club’s medical staff share responsibility for his recent injury woes.
Shaw has been plagued by injuries this season, limiting him to just 12 Premier League appearances.
His last match was United’s 2-1 victory over Luton Town on February 18.
The 28-year-old’s injury woes began with a three-month absence from August to November, followed by another month out until early February.
After a brief return, he was substituted at half-time against Aston Villa on February 11 due to hamstring discomfort.
Reflecting on the situation, the defender told British media, “I felt something against Aston Villa and came off at half-time.
“It’s kind of everyone’s fault. Partly my fault, partly medical staff. I didn’t train the whole week.”
Despite a scan showing minimal damage before the game, Shaw played after only one day of training, a decision he now regrets.
“If the manager asks me to play, I’m never going to say no. I shouldn’t have played,” he admitted.
This premature return led to a more severe hamstring injury, sidelining Shaw for the rest of the 2023-24 season.
Although included in England’s 26-man squad for the European Championship, Shaw has faced criticism for being available for England but not for United.
Addressing this, he explained, “I did push to do everything I can to be fit for United. It’s been disappointing for me, but I want to do everything I can, first and foremost, for United.”
Shaw is now taking his recovery “day by day” and will miss England’s group stage opener against Serbia on June 16 but hopes to play against Denmark four days later, according to reports by The Athletic.
