Andrea Belotti scored twice as Fiorentina beat Atalanta 3-2 in a thrilling finale to the Serie A season at the Gewiss Stadium.
Recall the encounter was initially postponed in March due to the tragic death of Fiorentina director Joe Barone.
The Sunday clash was marked by intense back-and-forth action and a suspected knee injury to Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini.
Despite coming off a 1-0 loss in the Conference League Final, Fiorentina started strong.
Gaetano Castrovilli’s cross found Belotti, who opened the scoring with a diving header. Atalanta quickly responded with Ademola Lookman’s chip finish, set up by Charles De Ketelaere.
Fiorentina regained the lead when captain Cristiano Biraghi’s cross was volleyed in by Nico Gonzalez.
Atalanta equalized once more through Scalvini, who scored from the edge of the box before his day was cut short by injury.
Just before halftime, Fiorentina took the lead for good. Lucas Beltran’s shot on goal was redirected by Belotti into an empty net, securing his second goal of the match.
The second half saw Atalanta push for an equalizer. Emil Holm narrowly missed after a Zidane-style move, and Mario Pasalic’s header struck the crossbar.
Fiorentina’s Nico Gonzalez nearly added a second with a clever header, but Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi made a crucial save.
Late in the match, Gianluca Scamacca had a chance to level the score, but debutant Fiorentina goalkeeper Tommaso Martinelli made a spectacular save.
Fiorentina’s victory officially concluded the Serie A season.
