UCL: Maatsen registers one as Dortmund hand Atletico exit in six-goal thriller
On loan Chelsea star Ian Maatsen registered a goal as Borussia Dortmund kicked out Atletico Madrid in the Champions League quarter-final.
Dortmund beat their visitors 4-2 in front of the 81,365 spectators at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday night.
While Maatsen had the opportunity to find the net, it was Julian Brandt masterclass, that helped the German side into the semi-finals in spectacular fashion.
From the blow of the whistle, both teams mounted pressure on each other, however, Dortmund were first to seize control, with Brandt opening the scoring in the 34th minute. Maatsen extended their lead just five minutes later.
However, coach Diego Simeone’s tactical adjustments at half time payed off, with Atletico returning to the second 45 minutes with two early goals.
Mats Hummels’ unfortunate deflection and Angel Correa’s equalizer threatened to alter Dortmund’s hopes.
Yet, Dortmund didn’t give up, fighting back with Niclas Füllkrug’s well-timed header to take the lead again.
Marcel Sabitzer then delivered the decisive blow, extending Dortmund’s lead to 4-2 on the night, while securing a 5-4 aggregate victory.
