Barcelona removes Dani Alves from list of club legends after rape conviction
Barcelona have decided to remove Dani Alves from their list of club legends following his recent conviction for rape.
Last week, Alves was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail and nine years of probation for the crime.
He has also been ordered to pay €150k in damages to the victim, with Neymar Junior reportedly helping to cover the cost.
Additionally, the former Brazilian international has a restraining order against the victim.
However, his lawyers have stated they will appeal the verdict, with a possibility he could be released from prison as early as this year.
Previously, Alves was included in Barcelona’s list of club legends, alongside former teammates like Lionel Messi, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.
But, following his conviction, the club have decided to remove his name from the list.
The move is in line Barcelona’s decision not to endorse or celebrate individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes, particularly those involving sexual offenses.
