EPL: Caicedo falters after assist, as Chelsea suffer 4-2 defeat to Wolves
Moises Caicedo experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in Chelsea’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves in the Premier League.
The Ecuadorian midfielder provided his first assist for the club, setting up Cole Palmer for the opening goal.
However, his joy was short-lived as he quickly faltered, leading to Wolves’ equalizer and a lead before halftime.
Caicedo’s assist to Palmer showed he’s still able to contribute to Chelsea’s attack, but his subsequent error in the midfield allowed Wolves to come back in the game.
His loss of possession led to Joao Gomes setting up Matheus Cunha for Wolves’ first goal, deflecting off Thiago Silva.
Minutes later, Caicedo failed to track Rayan Ait-Nouri, who finished off a Pedro Neto pullback, getting off Axel Disasi, to give Wolves the lead.
The 22-year-old, who became one of Chelsea’s most expensive signings in August 2023, has been a regular starter since joining from Brighton.
However, his mixed performance against Wolves points to the challenges he faces in adapting to the Premier League, where he made only 53 appearances before the summer blockbuster move.
Meanwhile, Wolves eventually asserted their dominance in the encounter at Stamford Bridge, with Cunha completing a hat-trick in the second.
Although Thiago Silva netted another consolation goal for Chelsea in the 86th minute to bring the game to 4-2, the deal was already done.
The defeat sees Wolves leapfrog Chelsea in the league standings, pushing Chelsea further away from the European qualification spots.
