How Roma owners sacked Mourinho less than 7 days of contract talks
Roma players were taken by surprise when they arrived at their Trigoria training centre, only to be informed of José Mourinho’s dismissal.
Mourinho was on Tuesday morning sacked by the club owner Dan Friedkin, following series of poor result since the start of the season.
The unexpected development follows Roma’s official statement confirming Mourinho’s departure, with the club reportedly set to appoint Daniele De Rossi as his successor.
According to reports from Sky Sport Italia, the players were unaware of the decision as they arrived for their scheduled training session.
Mourinho’s assistant, Salvatore Foti, is said to have arrived at the training ground visibly emotional after the news broke.
Dan Friedkin, who had traveled from the USA to Rome, personally conveyed the decision to both the players and Mourinho, leading to the postponement of the morning training session, until later in the afternoon, and would be led by De Rossi.
Dan and Ryan Friedkin, both owners of the club, expressed gratitude for Mourinho’s tenure but emphasized the need for immediate change.
The decision comes less than one week of the club considering a possible contract extension for the Portuguese.
Meanwhile, aside Roma’s dismal results that keep them 9th in the Serie A standings, they have also been kicked out of the Coppa Italia and failed to advance from their Europa League group.
