La Liga: Frankie de Jong faults Barcelona for Girona 4-2 loss
Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong has admitted there are no excuses for their 4-2 defeat against Girona in Sunday’s La Liga clash.
He noted that the team failed to perform at the required level in front of their home fans during the Catalan derby.
“It’s a tough defeat to take, but we weren’t good. Girona played very well, but it’s our fault.
“We haven’t been at the level we need to be. We have not taken care of the ball, and I include myself in that. That has cost the game,” he added.
The match was supposed to be an opportunity for Barcelona to strengthen their title defense and break Girona’s unbeaten run, but it ended in disappointment for them.
Despite Robert Lewandowski’s goal equalizing Girona’s early lead, Barcelona struggled to capitalize on chances in the second half.
Girona regained control with two late goals, handing Barcelona their second home defeat of the season.
With Barcelona now seven points behind in the league, de Jong emphasized the need for improvement, while remaining optimistic, “There is more than half of the season left. We have to improve.”
