22-year-old Swiss midfielder quits football to ‘follow Jesus’

22-year-old Swiss Midfielder, Silvan Wallner has sparked mixed reactions on social media after he announced his decision to quit football and ‘follow Jesus Christ.’

The young defender started his professional career with FC Zurich in 2020 and has accumulated over 100 appearances on the pitch.

Wallner also plays for two other clubs, Wil and Blau-Weiß Linz, where he signed a two-year contract in September this year.

Reports also shows that the football star is part of the Swiss U21 national team.

However, in a shocking development, Wallner in a statement announced his decision to retire from football at the young age of 22.

Defending his decision, Walner noted that as a devoted Christian, he is committed to keeping the laws of God as stated in the Bible.

He also noted that he wishes to keep the Sabbath day which is Saturday holy and as such would no longer continue his career as a footballer.

Walner further appreciated all who had believed in and supported his football career.

He said, “I am a devout Christian, and I read the Bible. I make my own decisions about my life. I wish to follow Jesus Christ, and as a result, the biblical day of rest has become important to me. As a footballer, this means that I no longer want to play professionally on Saturdays.

“This is my personal conviction, which I have reached in the last few days. I am not yet a member of any church. I say a big thank you to all the people who have accompanied and supported me in my sporting career.”

The footballer’s decision have left many in shock, as they are of the opinion that he can still serve God even while thriving in his football career.

Also, while some have wished him well in his journey to following Jesus, other are berating him on the grounds that he is a religious fanatic who does not know what he is doing.

This group are also insisting that Walner would regret his decision in years to come.
