2026 WCQ: Nigeria give up early lead to lose 2-1 to Benin

The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a 2-1 defeat against former manager’s side Benin in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

The match at Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium, Abidjan saw Nigeria take an early lead in the 27th minute, courtesy of Raphael Onyedika.

Despite their possession play, Gernot Rohr’s men made an equalizer just 10 minutes later, before going ahead for the first time in the game just before halftime.

Jodel Dossou scored the leveler, while Steve Mounie scored in the first half added time, to complete the comeback.

The Super Eagles struggled to create clearcut chances, and squandered a few created.

Despite strategic changes by coach Finidi George, including swapping Terem Moffi for Victor Boniface, Alex Iwobi for Paul Onuachu, the team still couldn’t find an equalizer.

After the Monday game, Nigeria now occupy the fifth spot in Group C, having played four matches, picking three draws, zero win and one loss.
